Wire and Cable Size in AWG Calculator for 1 and 3-Phase Load

Wire and Cable Size in AWG Calculator for Single and Three-Phase Load

There are multiple factors affecting wire size, including current carrying capacity, voltage drop, ambient temperatures, conductor material, frequency, cable bundling, installation type and method, load type, and local area codes (e.g., NEC and IEC).

If you are familiar with basic electrical calculations and tables, you can manually determine the suitable wire size for electrical wiring installations in both imperial and metric systems with the help of solved examples and related tables. Alternatively, you can use the AWG calculator to perform the same task for wire and cable sizing.

Wire & Cable Size Calculator in AWG

Calculating Wire/Cable Size formula for single Phase Circuits

Wire Circular mils = 2 x ρ x I x L / (%Allowable Voltage drop of source voltage)

Calculating Wire/Cable Size formula for Three Phase Circuits

Wire Circular mils = √3 x 2 x ρ x I x L / (%Allowable Voltage drop of source voltage)

Where;

  • ρ = Specific resistance or resistivity of Conductor
  • D = Distance in Feet (One way) i.e. ½ the total circuit length
  • I = Load Current

Note: the Value of ρ = Specific resistance or resistivity of Conductor is used here for copper and aluminum is 12.9 and 21.2 respectively at 75°C (167°F).

Minimum Wire Size:

Good to Know:<

If the wire size is greater than all gauges (i.e 0000 is largest one size of wire in), then electrical engineer measure it in CM, kCM or MCM instead of inches, because inch is a small unit of these kinds of wires. Where;

A circular mil (CM) is a unit of circular area with a diameter of one mil (one thousandth of an inch). It corresponds to 5.067×10-4 mm².

Where:

1000 CM (circular mils) = 1 MCM or 1 kcmil = 0.5067 mm², so 2 kcmil.

It is a unit for referring to the area of a wire with a circular cross section.

  1. Hi thanks for the wonderful information. How can I download that calculator? I am very glad if if you will help me thank you very much

    1. Dear Carlo!
Thanks for appreciation.. We are working on it. and it will be available for both Android and iOS stores… (Very Soon). once again Thanks.

  2. Hey I want a formula through which i can find relation between Conductor size and current carrying capacity of it????

  3. Dear Sir,
Can you please guide us what will be the copper wire size for installing 5 cassate AC of 4ton each.
    regards

  4. Dear Sir,
Can you please suggest the cable size/dia as per following.

    + Transformer. 1500kva
+ distance from transformer to plant. 1800 meters
    + ultimate consumption, 250kv..

    thanks and best regards.

  5. If you have a gauge 4 stranded or solid copper wire, how do you calculate its quantity equivalent of a lesser gauge stranded or solid wire? If I were to strand 10 gauge copper wire (solid or stranded), how many do I need to equal 4 gauge copper wire? Does this calculator able to do this? Is this even possible? I am guessing calculate the total resistance per linear foot and make it equal.

  6. Dear sir,
Could you please calculate the cable size for the following condition:
    – Load is 70 Amps
    – 220 volts
    – 3 phases
    – Distance 1000FT from the source.
    Thanx,,,
