How to Wire a Ceiling Fan? Dimmer Switch and Remote Control Wiring – IEC & NEC

6 Ways to Wire and Install a Ceiling Fan using Switches

Installing and wiring a ceiling fan is a very basic task even a beginner can easily connect a ceiling fan to the household wiring connection. As lots of complex ceiling fan wiring diagrams are available on the internet, we will try to present the very basic connections of fans using different types of switches and dimmers control for lights according to IEC and NEC regulations.

We will be showing the different methods of a ceiling fans connection i.e.

Note: The wiring colors in this tutorial are for illustration and clarification only i.e. these colors used in this guide are only for guidance and do not necessarily represent regional variance. See the bottom notes for US and EU Wiring color codes (NEC and IEC). In addition, some manufactures may use different wire colors, this way follow the regional color coding or check the user manual guide for clear explanation. If still not sure, contact a licensed electrician for proper installation.

First of all, switch off the main circuit breaker to disconnect the power supply before beginning the wiring installation of a ceiling fan. Each method has been explained with a step by step guide and related diagrams.

How to Wire a Ceiling Fan & Control using Light & Dimmer Switches - IEC & NEC

Wiring a Ceiling Fan with Single Way Switch & Speed Regulator Switch

In this tutorial, we will wire and connect the ceiling fan to the power supply and control it through single way switch which further control the fan speed by dimmer or speed control regulator switch.

To to this, follow the following instructions:

The following is the same wiring diagram as the dimmer switch and single way switch are enclosed in a combined box.

In this case, we have four wires from the ceiling fan terminal box. The brown wire as “live” to the fan, the black  wire as “live” to the light bulb, the blue wire as neutral and green / yellow as ground wire in IEC. While Black is Live, White is Neutral and Green/Yellow or bare conductor is ground in NEC,

A single way switch controls both the light dimmer switch and fan speed control regulator switch in this circuit as shown below. To do this, follow the instructions below:

You can also use separate light dimmer switch for bulb and speed control regulator for ceiling fan as follow.

Wiring a Ceiling Fan and Light by Separate Switches and Dimmer Switch

In this wiring tutorial, We will be controlling the ceiling fan by a single way switch and dimmer switch while the light bulb will be controlled by a separate switch. To do so, see the following instructions:

In this scenario, we will control the ceiling fan speed by pulling the chain / string switch and light bulb by separate single way switch. To do this wiring, see the following steps.

Wiring a Ceiling Fan with Remote Control & Receiver

In this wiring connection, you can control a ceiling fan (ON/OFF and speed control) through remote control or smartphone by installing a receiver with antenna at the fan box. If you have a built-in light bulb in the fan, you can control both of them remotely; otherwise, only the fan can be connected to the receiver terminals.

To control a ceiling fan through remote, follow the following wiring instructions:

NEC and IEC Wiring Color Codes:

We have used Black & Brown for Live or Phase or Hot , White & Blue for Neutral and Green/Yellow for Earth/Ground Wire. You may use the specific area codes i.e. IEC – International Electrotechnical Commission (UK, EU etc) or NEC (National Electrical Code [US & Canada] where;

NEC:

Single Phase 120V AC:

Three Phase 208 AC:

Three Phase 277V & 480V AC

IEC:

Single Phase 230V AC:

Three Phase 400 AC:
